FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to non-conference action, the Queens College women's soccer team increased the intensity in the second half before junior
Sara Messemer's (Whitestone, N.Y.) goal in the 76
th minute led the Knights to their first tie (1-1) of the season against Holy Family University Tigers Tuesday evening at QC Soccer Field.
The Knights found themselves trailing 1-0 as the Tigers scored off a corner kick in the fourth minute of the game.
Queens would look to respond in the 16
th minute but Messeser's shot would be denied by the Tigers goalie as they were unable to tie the game.
Sophomore
Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) would notch a shot on goal in the 29
th minute but once again the visitors would save the shot heading to the bottom center of the net.
The Knights continued their attack as Ragone tallied her second shot on goal but would be denied by the Tigers goalie again in the 37
th minute of play.
Senior goalie
Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) would deny two shots on goal towards the final minute of play in the first half as she kept the Knights' deficit at 1-0.
Resuming play, it was the Tigers who landed the first shot on goal in the 48
th minute of play but Vargas was up to the task as she denied the Tigers again.
Queens would start to retain possession as they looked to apply pressure on the Tigers' defense. In the 61
st minute, junior
Marina Pappas's (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) shot would be denied as they were unable to knot the game at 1-1.
Continuing their attacking pressure, Queens blasted three shots but would be denied by the defense.
As the Knights kept the ball in the attacking half, a through ball on the 18-yard box from sophomore
Kristina Gambino (Deer Park, N.Y.) would allow Messemer to complete the right foot shot as she bent the ball from 10 yards out to knot the goal in the 75
th minute of play.
Looking to respond right away, the Tigers would land a shot on goal but Vargas continued to deny the Tigers as she kept the game tied in the 77
th minute of play.
As play entered the final 10 minutes of play, the Knights would land three shots but were unlucky to find the back of the net.
With less than two minutes remaining, Queens looked to stun the Tigers for the win. Gambino's shot would stay out left in the 89
th minute before Pappas was denied the game-winning goal by the Tigers with 21 seconds remaining to give the Knights their tie of the season.
