Knights Men’s Basketball Starts New Year with Big Win Over Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Coming off 21 days of rest, the Queens College men's basketball team showed no sign of rust as they led wire-to-wire for a 78-51 win over Mercy College Mavericks in East Coast Conference play at Victory Hall.

The Knights saw 11 players register a point on the day as they picked up a 27-point win to improve to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in conference play, while Mercy moved to 0-11 overall, 0-4 in ECC action.

The 27-point win over the Mavericks is the highest margin of victory since the Knights won by 20 points on November 30, 2016, in the 93-73 victory.

How It Happened

Queens opened the game on an 11-0 run as seven Knights opened their account in the scoring. The Mavericks would finally get on the board with 11:11 left to play in the first half. The Knights would see their lead cut down to 16-11 as Mercy went on an 11-5 run with 7:58 left until halftime.

The Knights would extend their lead back to 22-12 using a 6-1 run as Queens continued to rotate their bench. Mercy would continue to cut into the deficit as the Knights saw their double-digit lead cut down to five once again. But sophomore Dion Herrington (Englewood, N.J.) would beat the first-half buzzer to give the Knights a 32-25 lead heading into halftime.

Junior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) would open the scoring in the second half as the visitors used a 9-5 run led by Carey's seven-point to extend their lead back 41-30 with 15:58 left to play in the second half.

Following a steal and emphatic dunk by freshman Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 13 points, the Knights used consistent scoring and never let their lead dwindle below 10 points to seal a 78-51 win.

By the Numbers

Four players scored in double-figures led by team-high 11 points from Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y) and Carey, while Seraphin and senior Evan Goldberg (Wantagh, N.Y.) registered 10 points. Goldberg tallied his second double-double of the season with a career-high 15 rebounds. While seven other Knights register two points or more on the day.

Notables: Freshman Walter DeFreitas (Brooklyn, N.Y) and sophomore Malik Bentinck (Queens, N.Y) made their season debut for the Knights.

Queens shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the field and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from three. The Knights' defense held Mercy to 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from beyond the arc. It was block fest for the Knights as they combined for a season-high seven blocks on the day

UP NEXT: Queens will have a week and a half break before they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. with a matchup against D'Youville College Saints on Friday (Jan. 14) and Sunday (Jan. 16) against Daemen College Wildcats.
