Rookies Lead the way to a 3-1 Victory over Cougars Tuesday Evening

CALDWELL, N.J. –  In a see-saw match that was filled with plenty of lead changes, come-back from behind set wins, the Queens College volleyball team (1-2) was able to overcame all the drama for their first victory of the season in a 3-1 win over the Caldwell University Cougars Tuesday evening. Set Scores were 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 26-24.

How it Happened
  • The Knights stayed out in the front using several 3-0 runs. The Cougars took their first set lead with the score at  23-22 before a kill by sophomore Alexis Deodat (Riverview, FL) tied the set at 23-23. Deodat delivered the lead with a service ace before a Cougars attacking error put the Knights up 1-0 with a 25-23 first set win.
  • The second set saw the Knights falling behind 8-2 leading to a quick timeout. Trailing 7-13, the Knights put up a 5-0 run to bring the deficit down to 12-13.
  • Trailing 15-18, Kills by freshmen Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Deodat helped the Knights tie the second set at 18-18.
  • Queens would use another 3-0 run to push their advantage to 22-19 before three straight errors by the home side put the Knights in a 2-0 set lead completing comeback from behind 25-21 second set win.
  • The Knights jumped out to a quick 7-2 advantage before the Cougars made a comeback of their own taking a 13-11 lead.
  • A 7-0 run pushed the Knights to a 21-20 lead and just four points away from a sweep. But the Cougars were unwilling to go away and ended the third set on a 4-0 run for a 25-22 win.
  • Leading 2-1, the Knights quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set. A 5-0 push put the visitors up 11-6 forcing a Caldwell timeout.
  • Leading 17-10, the Knights would surrender the lead, before both sides started to trade leads.
  • Tied 24-24, Franco delivered one of her team-high 16 kills to push the Knights ahead 25-24 before a ball handling error gave the Knights their first win of the season in a 26-24 fourth set win.
By the Numbers
  • Franco notched a career-best 16 kills and 26 digs for her second double-double of the season.
  • Franco's 16 kills are the most by freshmen since Malaika Hollis tallied 18 kills at Southern Connecticut (9/16/15).
  • Freshmen Anjeline Arnakis (Bayside, N.Y.) tallied 11 kills, six digs, and two service aces.
  • Sophomore Jorden Warthen (Baldwin, N.Y.) tallied career-best 35 assists on the night.
  • With all-round performance, Deodat tallied five kills, nine digs, and four service aces (career/game-high).
  • Knights ended their five-game losing streak against the Cougars.
Head Coach Stefan Leger Post Game Statement: Getting our first win today is a big stepping stone for the team. We fought very hard with Caldwell in every set to achieve our goal today. The effort the strong young women on this team put in was rewarded. Especially fighting through a few injuries, this win is a very special way to mark our first of the season and we look forward to keeping the win streak alive against Bloomfield College on Thursday.

UP NEXT: Attention shifts to Flushing as the Knights will play their first home game of the season in nearly two years. Bloomfield College Bears come to town on Thursday (Sept. 9) evening for a 7 p.m. showdown inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
