Women’s Soccer Season Opener Ends In Draw; 1-1

Lafayette Hill, PA – On Wednesday evening 110 minutes were not enough to separate the Queens College and Chestnut Hill College Griffins women's soccer teams as both teams settled for a 1-1 double-overtime draw from Victory Field #1 in non-conference action.

The Knights ended a six-game losing streak to open the season since their 3-0 win over Pace University (Sept. 6, 2013). The win streak continues over the Griffins with the Knights leading the overall series 3-0-1.

How It Happened
  • In the opening minute of play, senior Shannon Gibbons (Bellport, N.Y.) recorded the first shot on goal.
  • The Knights maintained possession in the first half as they recorded five shots on goal but were unlucky to find the back of the net.
  • A Queens foul in the 39th minute led to a Griffins free-kick. Griffins Caitlin Geiger blasted a shot from 40 yards over sophomore goalie Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
  • As half-time loomed, sophomore Sara Messemer's (Whitestone, N.Y.) shot was blocked before classmate Marina Pappas's (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) rebound shot sailed high.
  • A 57th minute Griffins foul in the box led to the first penalty kick of the season for the Knights.
  • Freshmen Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) stepped to the mark and put the ball in the lower left side of the net to knot the game 1-1.
  • Despite the Knights pressing in the second half, they were continuously denied the game-winner in the second half.
  • In the first overtime, Emily Hinck's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) shot was blocked in the 98th minute.
  • In the second overtime, Marino's header sailed high in the 104th minute, before Messemer's shot went wide of the net leaving the Knights to settle for a 1-1 draw.
By the Numbers
  • Ragone scored the lone goal for the Knights in her debut.
  • Queens held a 21-15 shot (12-4 shots on goal) on goal, corners (9-2) advantage.
  • The Knights were found offside on four occasions.
  • Marino had a game-high four shots on goal, while Ragone recorded three shots on goal.
  • Vargas (0-0-1) made three saves in the nets for the Knights.
UP NEXT: Non-conference play continues on Sunday (Sept. 12) as the Knights travel to Massachusetts to take on Stonehill College Skyhawks. Kick-off slated for 11:00 a.m.
