Women’s Soccer Shutout by Stonehill

North Easton, Mass. – On Sunday afternoon, the Queens College women's soccer team was blanked by Stonehill College Skyhawks in non-conference action at Skyhawk Field.

With the loss, the Knights move to 0-1-1 on the young season, while the Skyhawks improved to 2-1.

How It Happened
  • In the first half, the Skyhawks maintained consistent pressure over sophomore goalie Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) and the Knights defenders.
  • The Knights were outshot 17-4 as the Skyhawks controlled 59% possession of the ball.
  • Senior Shannon Gibbons (Bellport, N.Y.) would record the first shot on goal for the Knights in the 18th minute but Skyhawks goalie Hanna Copley would prevent the opening goal of the game.
  • A set-piece in the 21st minute for the Skyhawks allowed Peyton Nickerson to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
  • In the 24th minute freshmen Gabrielle Christian (Forest Hills, N.Y.) looked to tie the game but Copley would deny the Knights again.
  • The Skyhawks would go up 2-0 in the 39th minute as Taylor Burnham blasted a shot over Vargas from 23 yards out to close out the first half.
  • Head coach Rafael Morais would make a goalie change in the second half bringing in senior Nikoletta Pravata(Bayside, N.Y.) for the first time this season.
  • Looking to swing momentum their way in the second half, the Knights quickly put pressure on the home side.
  • Sophomore Marina Pappas's (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) shot in the 50th minute sailed high.
  • After a foul gave the Knights a free kick in the 53rd minute, freshmen Sarah Anderson (East Setauket, N.Y.) shot ricocheted off the crossbar allowing the Skyhawks to clear the ball before the Knights could get a rebound shot.
  • In the 64th minute, a straight red card on Skyhawks goalie Copley would get her sent off and setting up a free-kick for the Knights.
  • Freshmen Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) stepped up for the task, but Ragone would be denied her second goal of the season as new goalie Mia Jackson made a diving save.
  • Despite the Skyhawks playing a man down, the Knights would come up short and fall 2-0 for their first loss of the season.
By the Numbers
  • Queens were outshot by a 25-9 (6-4 shots on goals) margin.
  • Anderson, Gibbons, Christian, and Ragone landed a shot on goal.
  • In splitting playing time in goal, Vargas (0-1-1) made one save, while Parvatta made three saves on the day.
UP NEXT: Still searching for their first win of the season, the Knights take on Nyack College Warriors (3-1 overall) in non-conference play on Wednesday (Sept. 15) from Secaucus, New Jersey. Kick-off slated for 6:00 p.m.
