Women’s Soccer Rolls Past Nyack College Warriors

SECAUCUS, N.J.– On Wednesday evening, the Queens College women's soccer shut out Nyack College Warriors for their first win of the season at Laurel Hill Park. 
 
Led by junior Alexis Ciaramitaro (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Sara Messemer (Whitestone, N.Y.) goals in each half, the Knights moved to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Warriors moved to 3-2 on the season. 
 
How It Happened
  • Sophomore Samantha Pinto (Jericho, N.Y.). shot in the opening minute of play nearly put the Knights up 1-0 but Warriors goalie Lea Zehringer was up to the task.
  • Continuing the pressure on the Warriors, freshman Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) put a shot on goal in the 12thminute but would be denied by Zehringer once again. 
  • The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute of play as Ciaramitaro finished a cross from freshman Sarah Anderson (East Setauket, N.Y.) as Zehringer was unable to collect the ball cleanly.
  • In the first half, Queens would tally six shots on goals but would go into the half with a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Knights would keep the momentum in the second half as they continued to maintain possession of the ball. 
  • Messemer would seal the deal for the Knights in the 72nd minute as she took advantage of a back pass to chip the goal over Zehringer from 18 yards out for a 2-0 lead and close out the scoring. 
By the Numbers
  • Knights sophomore goalie Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) (1-1-1) earned her career shutout making five saves on the night. 
  • Anderson tallied her first assist of the season. 
  • Ciaramitaro, Messemer, and freshmen Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) tallied a team-high two shots on goals.
  • Queens would outshoot the Warriors with 10-5 shots on goals margin. 
  • The Knights increased their win streak over the Warriors to nine and remain unbeaten 5-0 on the road.
Head Coach Rafael Morais Post Game Comment: "I'm very happy and proud of the way our team played today. We have been through a lot this year and this first win of the season shows that we are on the right track. I also want to thank QC athletic department and everyone that is working so hard behind the scenes to ensure that we can be here playing the game we love."
 
UP NEXT: The Knights continue non-conference action on Monday (Sept. 20) as they travel to Philadelphia, PA with a matchup against Holy Family University Tigers. Kick-off slated for 4:00 p.m.
