PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Queens College women's soccer opened the week with an early non-conference matchup against the Tigers of Holy Family University Monday afternoon.
Playing their last non-conference matchup of the season, the Knights were unable to recover from early goals from the Tigers to drop a 3-1 contest at New Tiger Field. With the loss, the Knights move to 1-2-1, while the Tigers improved to 2-1-1 on the season.
How It Happened
- Senior goalie Nikoletta Pravata (Bayside, N.Y.) made her first start of the season and was put into action early on as Sarah Szychulski put the first shot of the game on target.
- After freshman Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) shot failed to threaten the Tigers goalie as it went wide.
- In the 13th minute, the Knights would find themselves trailing 1-0 after Hannah Florentino shot beat Pravata off a Tigers throw-in.
- Ragone would get a chance to tie the game in the 18th minute but her shot would sail wide left.
- After a Queens offside, the Tigers doubled their advantage on the counterattack as Carly Nothnagel finished off a cross from Jacqueline Ziegler in the 28th minute.
- The Knights would two more chances in the dying minutes but McSeed would deny the Knights their opening goal as the first half ended.
- Sophomore Samantha Pinto (Jericho, N.Y.). shot in the opening minute of play nearly put the Knights up 1-0 but Warriors goalie Lea Zehringer was up to the task.
- Continuing the pressure on the Warriors, put a shot on goal in the 12th minute but would be denied by Zehringer once again.
- Ziegler would chip a shot past Pravata as the Knights goalie left her mark too early to go up 3-0 in the 52nd minute.
- With the Knights still searching to get back in the game, the Knights would continuously run into a stubborn Tigers defense.
- It would take a 40 yard shot from sophomore Samantha Pinto (Jericho, N.Y.) in the 74th minute to put the Knights on the scoresheet
- But the early damage from the Tigers would be too much for the Knights to complete the comeback as they would conclude their non-conference portion of the 2021 schedule with a 3-1 loss.
By the Numbers
- Pinto tallied her first goal of the season, while freshman Sarah Anderson (East Setauket, N.Y.) notched her second assist of the season.
- The Tigers held a 16-10 shots advantage, with a 10-7 shots on goal margin.
- Splitting goalkeeping duties, Pravatta (0-1) took the loss while making four saves before sophomore Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) (1-1-1) finished off the game making three saves.
- Ragone and junior Sarah Marino (Enfield, CT) attempted a team-high two shots on goal.
- The Knights fall to 2-6 against the Tigers
