FLUSHING, N.Y.- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Regional Tournament returned to Flushing after COVID-19 canceled the 2020 tournament.
The Queens College women's program concluded its run in the ITA East Regional Tournament as several players advanced to the Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
Singles Championship
After having to make her Knights debut a season later than expected, freshman
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) impressed in her first showing. Unseeded, Fawzy went 3-1 in the ITA Singles East Regional Tournament Championship as she advanced to the quarterfinals. She started with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8-6) victory over Daemen College Christina Stasiuk to advance to the Round of 32. In the next round, she would defeat #13 Carlora Garcia Arguelies of Chestnut Hill College to the score of 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (7-5) to set up a matchup against Le Moyne Birdem Oz in the Round of 16. Fawzy would sweep Oz in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) to advance to the quarterfinals. But the run would end there as she was defeated by finalist Neus Ramons Moreno of Wilmington University to the score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Seeded #1 junior
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) 2019 title defense ended in the first round as she fell to Le Moyne Isabella Barona to the score of 7-6 (7-1), 6-1. While junior
Gabriela Sciarotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) fell to Fiona Pepper of Le Moyne College to the score of 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7-4).
Sophomore
Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) made her debut in the playin round but fell short in advancing to the Round of 64 with a loss to SNHU Isabella Andrade to the score of 6-2 6-4.
Doubles Championship
In the doubles championship, the new duo of Makal and senior
Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) started the tournament seeded #4 and would advance to the quarterfinals. The duo defeated USciences pair of Mazurek/Le to the score of 8-5. In the next round, they would defeat the Le Moyne pair of Pepper/Nunez in a closely contested match up picking up a 9-7 victory. But the pair would conclude the tournament with an 8-4 loss to SNHU Hubickova/Kall.
Doubles Pair of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland)/Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden)
Seeded #7 the Knights' sophomore double pair of
Mariana Ling (Orlando, Florida) and
Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) advanced to the Round of 16 with a 9-7 victory over Adelphi's pair of Chaves/Kielan. They would bow out next round with an 8-6 loss to UDC Lopez/Franco Martin.
The Knights' last pair of freshman
Shakima Hotaki (Flushing, N.Y.) and senior
Mana Koitabashi (Yokohama, Japan) made their debut together but would fall 8-1 to the Wilmington pair of Ramos/Nel.
