LINCOLN UNIV., PA. – After an offensive onslaught in Friday's series-opening 21-7 win, the Queens College baseball team continued the momentum into Saturday doubleheader against the Lincoln University Lions at LU Baseball Field in East Coast Conference action.
The Knights tallied in 23 hits as they outscored the home side 18-5 in the Saturday sweep. After taking game one 13-4, the Knights were limited to five-run but it would be more than enough as they took game two 5-1 to complete the three-game series sweep.
With the win, the Knights improved to 10-8 overall, 8-7 in ECC action, while the Lions moved to 4-13 overall, 4-7 in conference play.
In the overall series, the Knights lead 7-0 as they have outscored the Lions 91-24 dating back to the 2019 season.
With their 10
th win of the season, head coach
Chris Reardon '98 has tied his former head coach Ed Tatarian (1992-1998) for the most wins in Queens College baseball program history in the Division II era. In seven seasons, Tatarian amassed an overall record of 118-116.
Game One: Queens 13, Lincoln 4
The game one offense was led by freshman
Brad Sakellarides (East Moriches, N.Y.) (3-4 AB, 2B, 2R, 2RBI) who tallied his first three-hit performance and produced a game-high two-RBI while freshmen's
Colin Diez (Levittown, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, R, RBI, 2BB, SB) and
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2R, BB) contributed with multi-hit games.
On the mound, freshman
Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) (1-1,4.0 IP, 3H, ER, 3BB, 2K) earned his first win of the season as he pitched in relief as game one starter
John Dougherty (Kings Park, N.Y.) was unable to get out of the fourth inning. But the Kings Park native was impressive in his start as he went 3.2 IP, allowing only three hits, one run, two walks, and a career-high seven strikeouts.
The Knights wasted no time getting into the lead as they tallied three hits to lead 4-0 after the first inning of play before jumping out to a 7-1 lead after four and a half-inning of play as the Knights kept the pressure. The offense would score double-digits runs for the second game in a row as they tallied five hits to score five runs to take a commanding lead of 12-2 after seven and a half-inning of play.
The Knights would take game two of the three-game series with their 11th strikeout of the game to win 13-4.
Game One: Queens 5, Lincoln 1
In the nightcap, the Knights were limited to single digits in the runs and hits column but the five runs and eight hits were more than enough as the Knights completed the three-game sweep with a 5-1 win.
Leading the offense was Sophomore
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y) (2-4 AB, 2B, 2RBI) with his second multi-hit game of the season and game-high two RBI, while Diez (1-3 AB, R, RBI, BB), Sakellarides (1-4 AB, R, RBI) and Hoskins (1-4, RBI) contributed with one RBI apiece.
In the seven-inning affair junior
Dylan Hughes (Merrick, N.Y.) started game two as he pitched 4.2 innings while limiting the Lions to two hits, and struck out a season-high eight to earn his second win of the season.
In the top of the third inning, Diez would put the Knights up 1-0 with a single to left field before the Knight used another four-run inning to extend their advantage to 5-1 after five and a half innings of play.
Using only three pitchers in game two, the Lions were limited to three hits as they were unable to solve the moving ball as they were struck out 12 times. In the three-game series, the Knights struck out 41 Lions batters and extended their record to 7-2 when they have struck out 10 or more batters in a game.
With the Saturday sweep over Lions, the Knights completed their second conference sweep and third series win of the season.
