SPARKILL, N.Y.- Playing in sunny conditions, the Queens College Knights men's tennis team defeated the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans 5-2 to stay undefeated in East Coast Conference (ECC) action in Sparkill, N.Y. on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Knights improve to 6-4 overall, 5-0 in ECC play, while the loss moves the Spartans to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in ECC action.
The Knights started the match up 1-0 with the Spartans only fielding five players on the day and needed one doubles match to clinch the doubles point.
Doubles Competition
The Knights quickly went up 2-0 as the No. 2 doubles duo of senior
Eduardo Marino (Sao Paulo, Brazil) / freshman
Omar El Shehawey (Cairo, Egypt) dispatched the pair of Lennart Lehmann / Enej Hasicevic to the score of 6-1.
Promoted to No.1 doubles, the pair of sophomore
Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany) / freshman
Tim Ostheimer (Frankfurt, Germany) defeated the Spartans No. 1 pair of Kas Roosch / Ivan Laiz to the score of 6-4 to sweep the doubles competition.
Singles Competition
Leading 2-0, Sophomore
Mariano Bibiloni (La Plata, Argentina) put the Knights up 3-0 as he defeated Alvaro Barranco in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). The Knights would clinch the match at No. 4 singles as freshman
Francisco Gonzalez (La Plata, Argentina) fought a hard first set victory (7-5) before quickly dispatching Hasicevic to the score of 6-0 in the second set to give the Knights a 4-0 lead.
With the score of 6-2, 6-3, Marino would give the Knights their fifth victory of the day as he defeated Laiz in a two-set victory to improve to 2-0 on the season at the No. 4 singles spot.
UP NEXT: The Knights wraps up regular-season conference play on Saturday (Apr. 24) as they travel back to Sparkill, N.Y. to complete the three-game series against the Spartans. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. start time.
