BRIDGEPORT, CT – For 56:19 minutes of play, the Queens College women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights. But after freshman
Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) shot hit the crossbar and sophomore
Emily Hinck (Farmingdale, N.Y.) goal was called offside, the Purple Knights swung the momentum their way.
Queens would fall 2-0 at Knights field in East Coast Conference action dropping to
3-8-2, 2-6-1 ECC play, while Bridgeport moved to
10-6-1, 4-3-1 in conference play.
How It Happened
- Bridgeport went on the offense early with senior goalie Nikoletta Pravata (Bayside, N.Y.) being tested two minutes in as Amiah Washington put a shot on goal at 1:36.
- After the Knights earned their first corner of the game, junior Sarah Marino's (Enfield, CT) header would sail off the mark.
- Queens continuing to press up the field as they put the Bridgeport defense under pressure sophomore Sara Messemer (Whitestone, N.Y.) shot stayed wide at 21:21.
- 38 seconds later junior Alexis Ciaramitaro (Levittown, N.Y.) put the Knights' first shot on goal but was denied by Bridgeport's goalie Clara Karlsson.
- Messemer would test Karlsson at 27:29 but the Bridgeport goalie was up to the task once again.
- After freshman Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) beat the defense, her shot at 39:01 would hit the crossbar only to leave the Knight dejected.
- Pravata would make her fifth save of the first half as she denied Kate Thill at 42:26 to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
- Queens continuing to stay with Bridgeport finally looked to have opened the scoring but Diel would get denied by the crossbar at 56:10 before Hinck beat Karlsson nine seconds later off the rebound to have the goal called back.
- Taking advantage, Bridgeport went on the counterattack as 12 seconds later Pravata would deny Tori Smith's first shot before Smith put home her own rebound to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
- Having swung the momentum their way, Bridgeport continued to press and took a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute as Samantha Pierre scored off a free kick from 19 yards out.
- After the Knights were found offside in the 71st minute, Hinck shot would get blocked at 71:41.
- The Knights were unable to land a shot on goal for the remainder of regulation as Bridgeport defeated Queens 2-0 on the evening.
By the Numbers
- Queens were outshot 17-12 with Bridgeport holding a 12-4 shots on goals advantage.
- Ragone attempted a team-high four shots, with Ragone, Messemer, Ciaramitaro, and Hinck putting a shot on goal.
- Pravata made 10 saves on the night.
