WSOC Concludes 2021 Season against Daemen College

AMHERST, N.Y.– On Saturday afternoon, the Queens College women's soccer team (3-8-2 overall, 2-6-1 ECC) fall season came to a close with a loss to the Daemen College Wildcats (9-5-1 overall, 7-1-1 ECC) at Karrer Field.

Queens opened the scoring behind freshman Julia Ragone's (Centereach, N.Y.) fourth goal of the season but the Wildcats would score two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the Knights 2-1 in East Coast Conference action.

How It Happened
  • It was the Wildcats who took the opening shot of the game two minutes in as Brooke Amato shot was blocked before Alyssa Diaz's shot sailed wide.
  • Queens would put their first shot attempt on goal in the 13th minute but sophomore Hayley Matthews (Freeport, N.Y.) was denied by Daemen's goalie Tori Delappi.
  • Three minutes later, Ragone would give the Knights a 1-0 lead as her shot beat Delappi from the top of the box into the low left corner of the net.
  • Ragone would get another attempt in the 35th minute of play but her shot would get blocked.
  • With the Wildcats controlling possession and putting the Knights defense under pressure, senior goalie Nikoletta Pravata (Bayside, N.Y.) continued to deny Daemen the equalizer they were searching for.
  • Pravata would make back-to-back saves in the final four minutes to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • Ragone would continue the pressure in the second half but her shot would once again get blocked.
  • The Wildcats would finally get past Pravata in the 67th minute of play as Diaz tied the game 1-1.
  • But the tie would be short-lived as Diaz quickly gave Daemen a 2-1 lead just three minutes later.
  • With the Knights now trailing 2-1 and still 20 minutes left to play in regulation, it was the Wildcats who controlled the possession to close out the game.
  • Despite holding the Wildcats without a shot, the Knights could only muster two shots of their own for the remainder of the regulation and fall 2-1 to close out the season.
By the Numbers
  • Queens were outshot 14-10 (7-4 shots on goal) margin.
  • Ragone attempted a team-high four shots with two shots on goal, while two other Knights attempted a shot on goal.
  • Pravata made five saves on the day.
