ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon the Queens College volleyball team season came to end with a three-set loss to the Lions of Molloy College in East Coast Conference action.
Freshman
Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) notched her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs, while classmate
Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) added her sixth double-double dishing out 30 assists and 10 digs but the Knights were unable to overcome the Lions falling 3-0. The set scores were
26-24, 25-21, 25-16.
How it Happened
- Queens jumped out to a strong start taking a 7-2 before the Lions fought back to tie the first set 10-10.
- Both sides would trade points but the Knights would continue to maintain a lead of two or more throughout the first set.
- After a kill by Franco put Queens up 23-21, back-to-back attacking errors would enable the Lions to tie the set 23-23 before edging out with a first set victory of 26-24.
- In the second set the Knights would jump out to a 5-3 lead before the Lions went on a 7-5 run to take a 10-7 lead.
- Seniors Dee-Ana Mitchell (Middle Island, N.Y) and Genesis Soto (San Juan, Puerto Rico) would rally the offense and give the Knights a 15-13 advantage.
- But the Lions would not go away and use a 7-1 run to take a 20-16 lead before taking the second set 25-21 and a commanding 2-0 lead.
- Trailing 2-0, Queens came out flat in the third set as Molloy went ahead 8-2 before the Knights attempted a comeback.
- Mitchell would bring the Knights within three (13-10), but the offense of the Lions would overpower the Knights and complete the series sweep 2-0 with a third set victory of 25-16.
By the Numbers
- Mitchell finished off her career with 14 kills and eight digs, while Franco continued her stellar freshman year with her seventh double-double of the year.
- Franco extended her streak to eight games of 12 digs or more as she finished her first year leading the Knights in digs (264) and kills (189).
- Setter Boudouris finished her first year in Flushing with 296 assists and back-to-back double-double performance.
- Senior Danielle Naggar (Flushing, N.Y.) notched 10 dig in the performance.
The Knights conclude the year with an overall record of 4-19 and 2-10 in ECC play.
