FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season on Saturday evening falling to Jefferson University Rams by a score of 64-52 in the ECC/CACC Conference Challenge.
Queens drops to 0-1 on the year while Jefferson improves to 1-0 in the young season.
Seven Knights made their debut on Saturday with junior
Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pacing the home side with a career-high 22 points (9-of-20) from the field with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. While freshman
Janay Legagneur (Valley Stream, N.Y.) fell short of a double-double with eight points and team-high 10 rebounds.
How it Happened
Both sides started the game sluggish as they combined to miss their first six shots before a Demry jump shot opened the scoring at 7:40. Following a layup from freshman
Jennah DeGout (Bronx, N.Y.), the Knights would go up 4-0 before the Rams went on a 13-0 run. A layup from Demry would stop the bleeding but the Knights would trail 13-6 at the end of the first quarter.
As the Queens continued to cut into the deficit, the Rams would answer back each time and maintained their lead. After Rams' Martha Apple two made free throws extended the visitors lead to 11 (30-19) with 49 seconds left in the second quarter, the Knights would go on a 6-0 run, their best run of the night, and cut the lead down to five (30-25) going into halftime.
Queens opened the third quarter with a 4-0 run as Legagneur tallied back-to-back layups as the Knights cut the deficit down to one (30-29). But the Rams would put together a run of their own extend the lead back to eight (38-30).
Despite the Knights shooting 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the field, eight turnovers in the third quarter would enable the Rams to take a 52-43 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Jefferson would close the game with a 6-1 run to open the fourth and defeat the Knights 64-52 on their home court.
By the Numbers
Queens shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) from the field and 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from three. While Jefferson shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field and 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from beyond the arc. The Rams took advantage of 27 Knights turnovers and converted them into 20 points.
Jefferson Haley Meinel scored a game-high 26 points (12-24 FG) with five assists and five steals to lead the visitors.
UP NEXT: The Knights continue the ECC/CACC Conference Challenge on Sunday (Nov. 14) afternoon as they take on Chestnut Hill Griffins (0-1) with tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
