Four Knights Score in Double Figures in Four-Point Loss to Chestnut Hill

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Day 2 of the ECC/CACC Conference Challenge continued on Sunday afternoon as the Queens College women's basketball team hosted Chestnut Hill College Griffins at Lucille Kyvallos Court.

In a see-saw game that saw 13 lead changes, a five-second violation proved to be the most costly on the inbound for the Knights as they dropped the non-conference contest to the final score of 71-67.

Queens drops to 0-2 on the year while Chestnut Hill improved to 1-1 overall.

How it Happened

Queens would open the scoring on junior Khadija Demry's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) jumper 20 seconds into the game before both sides traded buckets in the early going. Queens would finish the first quarter on a 7-2 run. Tied 8-8, junior Tsahai Corbie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would finish a three-point play to put the Knights up 11-8. A jumper by freshman Julia DeBeatham (Menands, N.Y.) and a second-chance jumper by senior Nora Gabel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) would give Queens a 15-10 lead heading into the second quarter.

Gabel opened the second quarter scoring on back-to-back possession as the Knights extended their lead to 10 (20-10) with 9:06 left to play until halftime. But the Griffins would trim the lead with a 7-2 run of their own. Seeing their lead trimmed cut in half, Gabel put the home side back up by seven (24-17) with her seventh point of the quarter.

But Kaitlyn Carter kept the Griffins in the game scoring seven points in the final five minutes as the Knights held a 33-30 slim lead at halftime.

Demry would extend the lead to five with a layup 13 seconds into the third quarter before the Griffins went on a 12-1 run to take a 42-36 lead.

Queens would respond with a 6-0 run of their own and tie the game 42-42 as Gabel and Demry combined for five points. Both sides would continue answer each other for the remainder of the third quarter as free throws kept the visitors in the game.

Leading 52-50 to start the fourth quarter, a steal by Gabel would enable freshman Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to complete the fast break with a layup and extend the lead back to four (54-50) with 9:19 left in the game.

But the see-saw affair would continue as the fourth quarter saw nine lead changes. Trailing 63-62, a three-pointer from Corbie would put the Knights up 65-63 with 1:36 left on the game clock.

With 37 seconds left in the fourth, Griffins' Emily Chmiel completed a three-point play to put the visitors up 67-65. Demry would draw a foul 14 seconds later and a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line. But the Brooklyn native would miss the first free throw before knocking out the second one to make it 67-66.

Corbie would earn her fifth foul and put Cassie Sebold at the line but Sebold was only able to make one free throw and extend the lead to 68-66. Down two and 14 seconds left, Queens would get another chance to tie the game at the line. However Reeves was only able to put away one of two as the Griffins came down with the defensive rebound.

Down 68-67, the Knights would put Leah Miller to the line but she was unable to finish both and keep Queens hope of stealing this game or taking the game into overtime alive.

Queens would get one final possession after a jump ball situation resulted in Knights ball. With two seconds left, and out of timeouts, the Knights would turnover the ball with a five-second violation as they were unable to complete the inbound pass and dropped the final game of the conference challenge to the final score of 71-67.

By the Numbers
Four Knights scored in double-figures as Corbie led the offense with 16 points (7-of-12 FG) off the bench, while Demry tallied back-to-back games with double figures scoring 14 points (6-of-15 FG) and five rebounds. Gabel tallied 12 points (5-of-6 FG) with 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc while Reeves notched 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a team-high six rebounds.

Queens shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field and 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from three. While Chestnut Hill shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the field and 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from beyond the arc. Once again turnovers proved to be costly as the Griffins tallied 25 points off the Knights' 22 turnovers. Chestnut Hill won the rebounds battle with a 40-31 margin.

Chestnut Hill Leah Miller scored a game-high 22 points, while Chmiel and Sebold tallied 13 and 12 points to lead the visitors offense.

UP NEXT: The Knights continue non-conference action as they hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Waterbury, CT with a matchup against Post University Eagles. Tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
