ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.– Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Queens College women's soccer team fought hard in the second half as freshman Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) scored her fourth goal of the season but the Knights fell 2-1 to Molloy College Lions in East Coast Conference action at John A. Darcy Field Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Knights moved to 3-4-1 overall, 2-2 in ECC play, while the Lions moved to 9-2 overall, 4-1 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • The Lions controlled majority of the possession as they outshot the Knights 7-4 in the first half.
  • Sophomore goalie Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) was tested in the 6th minute of play but she would deny Lexi Verni the opening goal of the game.
  • After a quiet period of play, the Knights would trail 1-0 as Verni put a pass from Dana Poetzsch over Vargas in the 28th minute.
  • In the 39th minute of play, Marina Pappas (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) would attempt a shot only to get blocked.
  • The Knights would trail 2-0 after the 39th minute of play as Verni scored her second goal of the game.
  • The Knights started the second half with new profound energy and quickly went to work.
  • Sophomore Sara Messemer's (Whitestone, N.Y.) shot in the 49th minute would get blocked as the Knights attempted the first shot of the second half.
  • Diel would cut the deficit in half (2-1) as she finished a pass from Messmer in the 50th minute.
  • With the Knights still threatening, junior Sarah Marino (Enfield, CT) shot on goal was saved by Lions goalie Jackie Carty.
  • With hopes of forcing overtime Diel would get one last chance to tie the game in the 87th minute but Carty was up to the task as the Knights would fall 2-1 on the night.
By the Numbers
