WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y.- The Queens College women's tennis team picked up its first East Coast Conference victory of the season, earning five singles wins and a sweep of a doubles points en route to a 6-1 triumph at Daemen College Wildcats Friday evening.
With the win, the Knights improved to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in ECC while the Wildcats moved to 3-3, 1-1 on the season.
How It Happened
- Queens quickly swept the doubles points as #1 doubles pair of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Frida Rubio / Christina Stasiuk to the score of 6-2 before the #2 doubles pair of Mariana Ling (Orlando, Flordia) / Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) and #3 duo of Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) / Chole Certain (Obernai, France) swept their opponents to the score of 6-0.
- Makal continued her excellent run picking up her third straight victory at #1 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Rubio.
- Sciarrotta playing at #2 suffered a 7-5 first set loss before coming back to the second set 6-3 before clinching the #2 singles with a 1-0 (10-3) third-set tiebreaker win over Stasiuk.
- Ling returned to the singles lineup at #3 but fell in a third-set tiebreaker loss to the score of 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (8-10) against Kista Scime.
- Dropping only one point against Yinett Del Leon, Certain picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #4 singles play.
- Schmidt playing her first singles match of the season at #5 swept Hannah Pagano with the score of 6-0, 6-0.
- At singles #6, Mana Koitabashi (Yokohama, Japan) picked up the sixth point of the night for the Knights as she swept Ailish McDevitt to the score of 6-0, 6-0.
Next Match-up: The Knights wrap up the upstate trip with an ECC matchup against D'Youville College Saints at Orchard Park Country Club at 10:00 a.m.
