CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – The final home game of the season started with dark clouds and rainy conditions before the sky cleared up before kickoff for the Queens College women's soccer team East Coast Conference action against D'Youville College Saints Saturday afternoon.
But that would not be the only drama of the day. With time was winding down and the Knights headed towards a 1-0 loss before sophomore
Marina Pappas (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) completed a volley from freshman
Sarah Anderson(East Setauket, N.Y.) in the 86
th minute to tie the match.
The Knights
3-7-1 overall, 2-5-1 ECC) would fight back to earn a hard-fought 1-1 double-overtime draw against the Saints
(4-7-2 overall, 1-4-2 ECC) at the Susa Orlin & Cohen Sports Complex.
How It Happened
- The Knights started the match on a strong note sophomore Sara Messemer (Whitestone, N.Y.) quickly put Saints goalie Laurie Poeller under constant pressure.
- Queens attempted five shots before D'Youville Lauren Zwolenkiewicz was able to get the visitors' first shot off of the contest.
- Freshman Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) continued to put the defense under pressure but was unable to land a shot on target.
- Queens outshot D'Youville 10-5 but were unlucky to not have taken a lead at halftime.
- But it was the Saints who would strike first as Maggie Leeds took advantage of a back pass from the defense to put the visitors up 1-0 after 56 minutes of play.
- Leeds looked to have given her side a 2-0 lead but senior goalie Nikoletta Pravatta (Bayside, N.Y.) was up to the task at the 58:15 mark.
- Queens were held shotless for over 30 minutes before Pappas was able to find the back of the net.
- Down to the last four minutes of play, Anderson found an unmarked Pappas who blasted a shot over Poeller to tie the match 1-1 in the 86th minute of play.
- Neither team was able to land a shot in the final minutes and both teams were headed to overtime.
- In the first overtime, the Knights were awarded a free-kick from 40 yards out and almost found the winner but junior Sarah Marino's (Enfield, CT) header was saved by an alert Poeller in the 91st minute.
- Marino's shot would remain the only shot of the first overtime.
- In the second overtime, Emily Hinck (Farmingdale, N.Y.) would get one final shot on goal only to be denied by Poeller once again and end the game in a 1-1 draw.
