Women’s Tennis Sweeps Dominican 7-0 in Non-Conference Action

MONSEY, N.Y.- The Queens College women's Tennis team picked up their first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Dominican College Chargers Sunday afternoon at Manny Welder Park in non-conference action. 
 
With the win, the Knights improved to 1-1 overall, while the Chargers moved to 0-4 on the season. 
 
The Knights started the match up 2-0 with the Charges unable to field a full squad. Queens needed one doubles and singles point to clinch their first victory of the season. 
 
How It Happened
  • The Knights clinched the doubles points in quick fashion as the #1 doubles pair of Gabriela Sciarotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) / Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) dispatched the pair of Rupkatha Mukherjee/Ava O'Brien with a 6-0 dominating win.
  • At the #2 doubles, the pair of Mariana Ling (Orlando, Flordia) / Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) would also make quick work of Chargers pair of Nora Frederick/Alyssa Hamblin to the score of 6-2. 
  • In singles play at #3 Chole Certain (Obernai, France) and #4 Schmidt would win by default leaving the Knights one more point to clinch the match. 
  • Makal continued her winning ways as she defeated Mukherjee in straight sets to the score of 6-2, 6-3 at court #1. 
  • Sciarotta promoted to #2 singles wasted no time as she dropped one game against Frederick before winning 6-1, 6-0 to put the Knights up 5-0. 
  • Freshman Shakima Hotaki (Flushing, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut at #5 singles and won her first match of the season with a straight sweep to the score of 6-1, 6-1 against O'Brien. 
  • At singles #6, Mana Koitabashi (Yokohama, Japan) picked up her first singles win of the season as she shut out Hamblin 6-0 in the first set before Hamblin had to retire hurt giving the Knights their first sweep of the season. 
Next Match-up: The Knights return to East Coast Conference play as they travel to Western New York with a matchup against Daemen College Wildcats on Friday (Oct.8). First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
