Oliveri Scores in Non-Conference Matchup against Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Playing with a depleted squad, the Queens College men's soccer team (6-7 overall) fell short in a 5-1 loss to the Thomas Jefferson University Rams (4-8-2 overall) in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • Queens controlled possession to start the match before freshman Orick Briscoe (West Babylon, N.Y.) landed the first shot of the match on goal, only to be denied by Rams goalie Matteo Crescente.
  • After the Rams threaten to open the score, the Knights were stopped on the counterattack as sophomore Marco Oliveri (Whitestone, N.Y.) shot was denied by Crescente at the 15:05 minute mark.
  • Both goalies were in action after the half-hour mark as junior goalie Dario Cruz (Guadalajara, México ) denied Jefferson's Val Mokrejs at the 30:14 mark. Crescente would make his third save of the afternoon at 30:41 as he denied sophomore Milton Sionakides (Astoria, N.Y.) shot.
  • With the Knights' offense unable to find the back of the net, it was the Rams who struck with back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Nine minutes into the second half, Mohamed Jawara would put the Rams in a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • At 67:32, the Knights would finally find the back of the net as Oliveri put a volley from the top of the box from freshman David Rubio (Amityville, N.Y.) to put the Knights on board as they cut the deficit down to 3-1.
  • The Rams would tally two more goals to end any chance of a Queens' comeback to give the Knights their seventh loss of the season.
By the Numbers
  • The Knights were outshot 22-11 (10-5 shots on goal)
  • Oliveri tallied his second goal of the season, while Rubio notched his first career assist on the afternoon.
  • Oliveri attempted a team-high two shots on goals, while three other Knights put a shot on goal.
UP NEXT: The Knights return to Central Islip for their final home game of the season as D'Youville College comes to town. Kick-off slated for 5:30 p.m.
