DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.– Continuing East Coast Conference play Friday (Oct. 22), the Queens College women's soccer team
(3-6-1 overall, 2-4 ECC) went up against Mercy College Mavericks
(6-2-2 overall, 6-1 ECC) at Mercy Field.
The Knights ended a six-game scoreless streak against the Mavericks but fell 3-1 Friday afternoon.
How It Happened
- The Knights found themselves trailing 1-0 after 10 minutes of play as Fernanda Castro beat senior goalie Nikoletta Pravata (Bayside, N.Y.) with a pass from Marlene Avalos.
- The Knights would get their first shot of the attempt of the day in the 26th minute as freshman Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) put one on goal only to be denied by Mavericks goalie Melissa Torres.
- Queens would find themselves trailing 2-0 after 32 minutes of play.
- Alexis Ciaramitaro (Levittown, N.Y.) would put a shot on goal several minutes later but Torres would deny the Knights once again.
- After being outshot 8-2 in the first half, Queens would quickly try to turn the game around in the second half as sophomore Marina Pappas (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) put the Knights on board with an assist from freshman Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) in the 50th minute of play.
- The Knights still threatening to tie the game up continued to pressure Torres but the Mavericks goalie remained firm.
- Ragone would be denied once again by Torres as her shot was muffled in the 71st minute.
- The Mavericks would put the game away in the 75th minute with their third goal of the game and prevent any further comeback from the Knights.
By the Numbers
- Ragone attempted a team-high four shots with three shots on goal, while Pappas put two shots on the goal.
- Pappas scored her second goal of the season, while Diel tallied her first assist of the season.
- Pravata made a career-high 12 saves on the day
- The Knights were outshot 22-10 (16-6 shots on goal).
