Cruz Makes 11 Saves in MSOC 4-2 Loss to Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. –  It was an explosive start for the Queens College men's soccer team (6-6 overall, 2-5 ECC) but ultimately the Knights fell 4-2 to the Mercy College Mavericks (7-4-2 overall, 3-2-2 ECC) Friday (Oct. 22) afternoon in East Coast Conference action.

How It Happened
  • The offense was roaring for both sides in the opening 10 minutes of play with three goals.
  • Mercy struck first as Mattias Kuhn scored in the 3rd minute of play before sophomore Nicholas Tagios (East Williston, N.Y.) answered back with a goal of his own to tie the game and only four minutes have gone by.
  • The Mavericks would retake the lead in the 9th minute of play as Pau Echarri put one past junior goalie Dario Cruz (Guadalajara, México ) from an Archie Jones pass.
  • Mercy goalie Eirik Elvestad would deny Tagios his second goal of the game in the 50th minute of play.
  • With Mercy's offense continuing to keep Cruz busy, it was the Knights' offense that struck in the second half.
  • Senior Erik Hernandez (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) tied the match 2-2 as he completed a cross from freshman Nicolas Cifuentes Diaz (East Hampton, N.Y.) in the 63rd minute.
  • But the tie would be short-lived as Mercy quickly put the match away with two goals in three minutes.
By the Numbers
  • The Knights were outshot 23-15 (15-6 shots on goal)
  • Cruz made 11 saves (career-high) on the day.
  • Tagios attempted a team-high six shots of the day, with three shots on goal.
  • With his eighth goal of the season, Tagios continues to climb up the single-season goals record putting himself sixth in the record book.
