LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. – After finding themselves trailing 1-0 after five minutes of play, the Queens College women's soccer team scored eight unanswered first-half goals to complete a 14-1 rout of Lincoln University (PA.) Lions Saturday afternoon at LU Aux Field in East Coast Conference action.
With the win, the Knights moved to 3-3-1 overall, 2-1 in ECC play, while the Lions moved to 0-7 overall, 0-4 in conference action.
How It Happened
- The Lions would open the scoring in the 5th minute as Tamara Evans put one pass sophomore goalie Ariana Vargas (Brentwood, N.Y.) to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
- Queens would respond several minutes later as freshman Sarah Anderson (East Setauket, N.Y.) found Sarah Marino (Enfield, CT) to tie the game 1-1.
- The Knights would take a 2-1 lead following an own goal as freshman Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) header deflected off of a Lions defender.
- After a quiet 10 minutes of play, the Knights opened the floodgates as they scored six goals led by a first-half brace from freshman Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and sophomore Samantha Pinto (Jericho, N.Y.) to go into halftime up 8-1.
- Queens would add two more in the opening 10 minutes of the second half as Ragone and Anderson put the Knights up 10-1.
- Diel would complete her hattrick in the 66th minute as Ragone push a through ball for the Stony Brook native to blast a right-foot shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
- Sophomore Sara Messemer (Whitestone, N.Y.) and junior Alexis Ciaramitaro (Levittown, N.Y.) would add their names to the score sheet to close out the scoring as Queens scored 14 unanswered goals to pick up their second conference win of the season.
By the Numbers
- Queens outshot Lincoln 44-4 (32-2 shots on goals) margin.
- Diel tallied her first goal of the season and top it off with a hat trick to lead all Knights with three goals, while Pinto, Messemer, and Ciaramitaro scored two goals on the day.
- The Knights tallied a season-high five assists led by Ragone game-high two assists.
- Queens has scored 12 goals or more on three different occasions against the Lions and lead the overall series 4-0.
