Men’s Soccer Stumbles in 5-1 Loss to Roberts Wesleyan

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y.– Senior Erik Hernandez (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) scored in the first half but the Queens College men's soccer team (6-5 overall, 2-4 ECC) was hurt on the counterattack in the second half as they fell 5-1 to the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks (5-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 ECC) in East Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • Hosting their first home match of the season at the Susa Orlin & Cohen Sports Complex, Queens came out of the gate firing but it was the visitors who would open the scoring first.
  • Nathan Ferguson put the Redhawks up 1-0 as he put a pass from Justin Robertson with a diving header past junior goalie Dario Cruz (Guadalajara, México ) in the 17th minute of play.
  • Queens would continue to attack but Roberts Wesleyan goalie Caleb DaSilva continue to keep shut the Knights out.
  • Hernandez would finally put one past DaSilva as he completed a cross from freshman Leonel Zelaya (Amityville, N.Y.) to tie the score 1-1 in the 38th minute.
  • Several minutes later, sophomore Milton Sionakides (Astoria, N.Y.) looked to give the Knights a 2-1 lead but DaSilva deflected the shot away.
  • Zelaya continued to be a threat for the Knights but the home side continued to be denied the visitors.
  • As the Knights looked for the lead, the Redhawks would score two quick goals on the counterattack as they went up 3-1.
  • With 30 minutes still left to play, Queens continued to run into a stubborn defense.
  • The visitors would strike two more times to put the game away as Knights fell 5-1 on the day.
By the Numbers
  • Queens held a 20-15 shots advantage while attempting 11 shots on goals.
  • Zelaya had a team-high three shots on goals while five other Knights put a shot or more on goal.
  • Hernandez tallied his second goal of the season, while Zelaya notched his third assist of the season.
  • Hernandez's two goals on the season have been assisted by Zelaya.
  • The 5-1 margin loss is the most since the Knights fell 6-2 against a conference foe since the 8-2 loss back on October 20, 2012 against LIU Post.
UP NEXT: On Friday (Oct. 22) the Knights travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. with a matchup against Mercy College Mavericks in East Coast Conference. Kickoff slated for 3:00 P.M.
