SPARKILL N.Y.- On Friday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team (3-2 overall, 2-2 ECC) concluded the road portion of the 2021 schedule with a 5-2 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College (6-1 overall, 3-1 ECC) in East Coast Conference action at Riley Family Tennis Courts.
Senior
Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore
Chole Certain (Obernai, France) picked up the lone points for the knights in singles play.
How It Happened
- In doubles points the #3 doubles pair of sophomore Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) / Certain fell 6-1 to Spartans Paula Palero/Eliza Mulder before STAC took a 1-0 lead with #2 doubles pair of Mariana Ling (Orlando, Flordia) / Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) were defeated by Samanta Robles/Elita Silins.
- Queens #1 pair of Junior Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Ulander picked up a 6-4 victory Karina Blas/Vera Gak Anagrova.
- Looking to come back in singles play, the Knights were derailed in singles play as Ling fell 6-4, 6-0 to Robles at Singles #4 before Sciarrotta was defeated by Palero at Singles #3 in a three-set match to the score of 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 to put the Knights in a 3-0 hole.
- Ulander would put the Knights on board with a three-set victory as she came back from a first set loss of 6-2 to defeat Viktoriia Pavlovets 6-4, 6-3 in the last two set as the deficit was trimmed down to 3-1 at Singles #2.
- At Singles #1 Makal would suffer her first singles conference loss of the season as Blas gave the Spartans the #2 seed in the upcoming ECC women's tennis championship as the Poland native fell 6-1, 1-6, 3-6.
- At Singles #56 senior Mana Koitabashi (Yokohama, Japan) was defeated by Silins 6-1, 6-1 to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead.
- Certain would pick up the second point of the day for the Knights with a three-set victory over Mulder with the final score of 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (8-6).
Next Match-up: The regular season concludes on Friday (Oct. 22) as the Knights host Molloy College Lions at the Queens College Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 11:00 A.M.
