Gallagher Drives In Three For #QCSB in Wednesday Doubleheader Against Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Mar. 4, 2020) - Katherine Gallagher had three hits and three RBI for the Queens College softball team on Wednesday (Mar. 4) but the Knights were unable to come up with a victory in either end of a doubleheader against Barry University as the Buccaneers won by scores of 5-4 and 10-2.

Queens is now 0-6 on the year while Barry improved to 12-15 with the victories.

Game One: Barry 5, Queens (NY) 4
Berlin Colvin opened the scoring for the hosts with an RBI double in the first inning off of QC starter Emma Wimmer and the Buccaneers were off and running. A two-run single from Michelle Roldan followed as Barry built its lead to a 3-0 edge after one inning of play. Another RBI double from Colvin in the second inning had the Buccaneers ahead by four runs while the Queens managed just four hits off of Barry starting pitcher Sarah Johnson through the first five innings of play. The Knights were able to break up the shut-out in the top of the sixth inning as a one-out triple from Marisa Sagona led to a run-scoring single off the bat of Gallagher and set the stage for a wild end to the first game of the double-dip.

Down three runs in the top of the seventh inning, Queens quickly picked up a pair of outs to bring the Buccaneers within an out of winning the game. Jenny Murphy kick-started the two-out rally with a single and Noelle Bryggman reached on a fielding error to bring the tying run to the plate. That would be Gabriella Vicidomini who would single on the first pitch from Johnson; however, a cavalcade of errors followed which in turn allowed Murphy and Bryggman to score and Vicidomini to reach third base. The next batter, Danielle D'Angelo, singled to second base to bring home Vicidomini with the game-tying run. Unfortunately for the Knights, a lead-off double in the bottom of the frame by Kayla Posten led to a walk-off sacrifice fly from Payton Germer gave the Buccaneers the victory.

Gallagher, Sagona and Vicidomini each had two hits in the contest for the Knights while Wimmer struck out two batters in the pitcher's circle.

Game Two: Barry 10, Queens (NY) 2 - Five Innings
Gallagher opened the contest with a two-run single to right field to put the Knights ahead but Barry would return the favor with RBI singles from Roldan and Fallon Dragich plating three Buccaneers and giving the home side a 3-2 lead. Barry reliever Cassandra Lee held Queens in check over the final four innings of play and a seven-run frame in the bottom of the fifth inning would induce a mercy rule in the game.

Ann Grimshaw went 3-for-3 in the contest and Jessica Hickey also collected two hits for Queens in the effort. Allie Stanya struck out two batters in her four-plus innings of work in the circle.

Queens will travel to Fort Lauderdale Friday (Mar. 6) to face Nova Southeastern in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
