Gonzalez Earns First Singles Victory as #QCMTEN Rolls Over Adelphi Wednesday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2020) - The Queens College men's tennis team easily dispatched of its first Division II opponent of the 2020 spring season as the Knights won a 7-0 contest against Adelphi on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at the Queens College Tennis Center.

Queens (2-1) secured the match's first point by winning two of the three doubles matches on the day. The tandem of Lucas Demuth and Moritz Borges earned a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Gabriel Balestero and Luke Attride-Stirling while Hugo Evangelista de Andrade and Julius Schulte claimed a 6-2 triumph at third-doubles against Henrique Souza and Valentin Le Goupil-Maier to clinch the point. The second-tandem of Tim Ostheimer and Eduardo Marino were defeated, however, by AU's Sabin Saveluc and Andrew Ray in a 6-3 decision to prevent the sweep.

The Knights would sweep the remaining six points in doubles play with three matches finishing simultaneously to earn the overall match win. First, Kareem Rashad turned away Saveluc at first-singles to the tune of a 6-2, 6-1 score before Francisco Gonzalez earned his first career victory in a QC uniform at the sixth flight of singles. The freshman's 6-0, 6-2 win versus Souza was followed mere seconds later as Demuth closed out a third-singles win against Attride-Stirling (6-1, 6-3). Marino exacted his revenge in singles play next, topping Balestero at the second flight in a 6-1, 6-2 win which was followed by Mariano Bibiloni taking care of David Robres in a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Borges closed out the contest by winning his fourth-flight singles match against Le Goupil-Maier in a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Queens returns to action on Friday (Feb. 21) as the Knights head to Waltham, Mass. to face Northeast-10 foe Bentley University.
