Brown's Big Game Lifts #QCWBB to 75-60 Win Over Bridgeport Saturday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2020) – The Queens College women's basketball team utilized a 33-16 second-half run over a 13-minute span to race past Bridgeport by a final score of 75-60 on Saturday (Feb. 1) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

Queens is now 6-13 with the win and 3-6 in ECC play while Bridgeport falls to 4-17 on the year and 2-7 in league action with the loss.

Queens started the contest on a 7-0 run thanks to four points from Lucy Tougas and three from Peay both on the floor and at the free-throw line. The Knights could not hold the lead, however, as Felton scored 12 off the bench and hit five field goals; the transfer from Southern Mississippi accounted for nearly all of UB's field goals in the opening quarter with Samirah Henderson hitting the only other bucket for the Purple Knights in the first frame.

Bridgeport led by an 18-15 margin at the end of the first quarter but Queens would slowly chip away at the disadvantage despite Felton's prowess from the floor. QC actually took a 29-27 lead on free throws by Brianne Moxley and Chidinma Ndukauba with under two minutes to play in the half, but a bucket by Henderson and a lay-up from Vienna Knox put the Purple Knights up by a 31-29 margin at the halftime break.

Queens would open the second half on a 10-2 run as Raiana Brown began to assert her dominance. The freshman center would score eight points in the third quarter---after putting up just eight points in the first half---as Queens shot 50% (9-18) in the third quarter and led by a 52-47 margin before heating up once again in the fourth quarter. Back-to-back threes from Harmony Philo cemented an 8-0 run as Queens took a 60-47 lead just two minutes into play. Bridgeport would not score their first field goal of the fourth quarter until the 6:10 mark when Gracen Kerr knocked down a hook shot in the paint to cut QC's lead to 62-49 before a Moxley three-ball provided the answer and what looked like the proverbial knock-out blow in the contest.

Bridgeport would go on an 11-4 run to bring the game within a nine-point deficit at 69-60 with 90 seconds to play thanks to consecutive three-pointers from Janiece Loney but Peay would corral an offensive rebound on a Tougas miss and hit the put-back plus the free throw to end the comeback effort.

Brown ended the game with another double-double, scoring 23 points and adding 10 rebounds. Peay had 14 points, eight boards and six assists and Philo hit four three-pointers to end the night with 12 points. Tougas added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists and Moxley closed the game with 11 points on the night.

Felton had a game-high 24 points for Bridgeport in the loss but was the only Purple Knight in double figures.

Queens returns to action on Friday (Feb. 7) as the Knights welcome Roberts Wesleyan to Fitzgerald Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. contest in Flushing.
