Women's Soccer Stumbles in Season-Opening Loss at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2019) - The Queens College women's soccer team kicked off its 2019 campaign with a non-conference tilt at Saint Rose on Thursday (Sept. 5) evening. Unfortunately, the host Golden Knights reigned supreme with a 3-0 victory in the season-opening contest for both teams at the Christian Plumeri Sports Complex.

Knights That Shined
  • Freshman goalkeeper Ariana Vargas had four saves in her collegiate debut in net for the Knights.
  • Victoria Ramirez accounted for three of QC's nine shots in total, with two coming on target to challenge Saint Rose goalie Marika Laurendeau.
  • Rookie midfielder Sara Messemer took two shots in the game and was a key force of play across the field in the contest.
  • Sophomore forward Sarah Marino also had a pair of shots in the contest.
The Story of the Contest
  • Vargas made the first save of the contest on a Nina Predanic shot in the opening ninety seconds of action.
  • A flurry of chances for the Knights came in the fifth minute of play on a corner kick. Two shots by Marino were blocked and off-target, with Messemer challenging Laurendeau for a save.
  • Saint Rose scored in the ninth minute as Sanja Ratkovic put home a rebound to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
  • Predanic added a penalty-kick marker in the 32nd minute and Ciera Lundy's 60th-minute tally closed the scoring account.
