Women's Soccer Takes Down Staten Island in 2-1 Victory Saturday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2019) - A pair of first-half goals were all that the Queens College women's soccer team needed on Saturday (Sept. 28) to win a 2-1 decision over the College of Staten Island in a non-conference match-up at Knights Field. The Knights improved to 5-3 on the season with the victory over the Dolphins.

How It Happened
  • The Knights struck first in the 13th minute of play following a Staten Island goal kick and turnover. Victoria Ramirez won a 50/50 ball deep in the Dolphins' territory and then found herself in the box in a one-one-one situation where she calmly slid a shot past CSI goalie Samantha Beaudreault to give QC the 1-0 lead.
  • Following another goal kick turonover from the Dolphins in the 26th minute of play, Ramirez sent a cross in from the near-side of the field to a diving Sara Messemer, whose header was true to the target. Messemer's first career goal would provide the insurance marker and would be an important part of how the game story would conclude.
  • The Knights dominated the first half of play with an 8-2 shots margin, but the visiting Dolphins got a goal back in the second half as Samantha LaValle scored on a high bouncing pass from Rita Henriquez in the 55th minute of action.
  • Staten Island had one last good chance with a minute to go in the contest and Gabrielle Chirco's free kick was a perfect strike towards the net; the attempt was comfortably saved by QC goalie Ariana Vargas to lock down the victory.
Knights That Shined
  • Queens out-shot CSI by a 13-5 margin in the contest with Guro Eriksen pacing the Knights on a three-shot afternoon.
  • Ramirez was one of three players with two shots in the contest and had a team-high two targets along with Elvira Hernandez.
Up Next on the Docket

Queens will play a mid-week game in primetime as the Knights head to Southern Connecticut on Wednesday (Oct. 2) for a 7 p.m. showcase with the Owls in West Haven, Conn.
