NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 2, 2019) - The Queens College women's soccer team ventured up to Jess Dow Field on Wednesday evening (Oct. 2) to take on the Owls of Southern Connecticut State in a non-conference tilt. The hosts, ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region rankings, came away with a 2-0 victory over the Knights after scoring a goal in each half.
With the loss, Queens falls to 5-4 and SCSU improves to 5-2-1 on the season.
How It Happened
- Southern Connecticut and Queens played a quiet first fifteen minutes before a penalty kick for the Owls' Marissa Grisell in the 16th minute of play. QC goalie Shenae Kreps was up to the task in making the save to keep the game scoreless for the moment.
- In the 25th minute, SCSU's Meaghan Kelley lofted a shot into the top-right corner of the net to put the home side ahead by a 1-0 margin. That would be the score as the game went to halftime.
- Southern Connecticut scored the insurance marker in the 55th minute as Kreps stonewalled Kaitlyn D'Amico's header only for a rebound attempt by D'Amico to find its way into the back of the net.
Knights That Shined
- Kreps played a strong game in net, making seven saves in the effort.
- Queens took five total shots with Connecticut product Sarah Marino putting two shots on target in her homecoming contest.
- Guro Eriksen and Jennifer Hernandez each added a shot on goal while Sara Messemer put an attempt off-target in the game.
