DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2019) - Down two goals in the second half, the Queens College men's soccer team made a charge that fell just shy of equalizing as the Knights were defeated by No. 12 Mercy in a 2-1 ECC match at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry. The game was the conference opener for both teams.
Mercy improves to 5-0-1 and 1-0 in ECC play on the season while Queens falls to 2-3-1 and 0-1 in conference contests.
How It Happened
- Mercy applied early pressure and scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute of play. A cross into the box by Steven Fernandez found Archie Jones's waiting foot, and his pass to Ignacio Mangada resulted in the Mavericks taking the 1-0 lead.
- After halftime, Mercy added an important insurance marker from Nigel Hawthorne on a through ball by teammate Kevin Rodriguez.
- Queens struck back with just under twenty minutes to play in regulation as Victor Guazhambo fed Emgi Gousse for a slick goal from outside the eighteen-yard box that soared into the upper right corner of the net.
- The Knights nearly had the equalizer in the same minute of play but Leo Pinto's attempt went wide; it was the last shot Queens would have in the game.
Knights That Shined
- Queens took just five shots in the game with two of them coming off the foot of defender Paul Hayes.
- In goal, Marek Strzelczyk parried away four opportunities from the host Mavericks.
