GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2019) - It seemed fitting that a highly-anticipated rematch of two East Region foes that played a chippy contest one year ago would go the full 110 minutes. Unfortunately, neither the Queens College men's soccer team nor Franklin Pierce could find the golden goal that would break a 1-1 tie on Tuesday evening (Sept. 17) at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
How It Happened
- The opening kickoff was taken by the Knights (2-2-1 overall), but Franklin Pierce jumped into a quick attack that ended with the game's opening goal in the first minute. Stefan Lohberger had a free kick opportunity from about 25 yards out that was parried by Marek Strzelczyk, but Carlos Ferrando Felis lobbed a rebound past the QC keeper to put the visiting Ravens ahead by a 1-0 margin.
- The Ravens almost doubled their lead in the 24th minute with a goal, however a referee conference confirmed that Isak Helgeson was offside; thus, Queens still trailed by a 1-0 margin going into the halftime break.
- The Knights equalized in the 83rd minute after a handball inside the penalty box by Franklin Pierce. Adrian Garcia capitalized on the opportunity, slotting his attempt to the right of keeper Clay Thomas.
- Both sides had their opportunities to score the game-winning goal in the extra time periods, but neither team converted on their chances.
Knights That Shined
- Despite a 17-9 shots advantage for the visitors, Garcia's two shots on target led the way for the Knights.
- Seven other players for the Knights recorded a shot in the contest.
- Strzelczyk made six saves including some fantastic parries to keep Franklin Pierce to just the one goal.
Up Next on the Docket
Queens will open up conference play on Saturday (Sept. 21) with a contest in Dobbs Ferry against ECC preseason favorite Mercy College set for 3 p.m.
