BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 3, 2019) - Facing one of the premier pitchers in the East Coast Conference in the opener of a series that will determine whether they make the playoffs or not, the Queens College baseball team mustered a decent effort that fell short in a 4-1 loss to LIU Post on Friday (May 3) in Brookville.
Queens (24-20-1, 13-12 ECC) went behind by a 2-0 score in the bottom of the first inning against the conference-leading Pioneers (31-13, 22-3 ECC) and did not score until an RBI single by
Brian Watters in the seventh inning broke up the shutout of LIU Post ace James Varela. Varela struck out 11 Knights hitters in seven innings of work, surrendering six hits to improve to 8-3 on the season.
Dylan Hughes, meanwhile, pitched fairly well for QC in the defeat. Hughes went six-and-two-thirds innings with five strikeouts while yielding four runs on six hits.
John Rodopoulos recorded four outs of relief without surrendering a hit.
Ron Linsalato had three hits for Queens while Watters and
Louis Antos each recorded a multi-hit game.
Queens hosts LIU Post on Saturday (May 4) in a doubleheader at Hennekens Stadium beginning at 12 p.m.
