FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 11, 2019) – After grinding out a win in doubles play, the Queens College men's tennis team claimed three easy wins at singles competition to take down Merrimack College by a final score of 4-0 on Saturday (May 11) at the NCAA Division II Tournament being held at Southern New Hampshire University in Hooksett, N.H.
The Knights, the third-seeded team in the East Region, will take on SNHU on Sunday (May 12) at 12 p.m. with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line.
Cosme Jubera and
Lucas Demuth won a 6-0 decision at first-singles but Nick Volos and
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade were defeated at third singles in a 6-4 contest. The doubles point came down to the middle tandem as
Richard Sec and
Kareem Rashad put QC ahead by a 1-0 score with a 7-6 (7-5) win against Jonathan Garcia and Alex Fedorov.
Jose Zurro kicked off the dominance in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the sixth flight over Andre Singer. Demuth then dispatched of Fedorov (6-4, 6-3) at third-singles to put the Knights within a point of advancing in the regional. That point came at second singles as Rashad's 6-4, 6-4 triumph versus Garcia capped off the day and sent Queens forward to face the Penmen of SNHU for the chance to move on to Florida and the national stage.
