NCAA Tournament Run Ends for Men's Tennis in 4-2 Loss to SNHU Sunday

HOOKSETT, N.H. (May 12, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team will not be moving forward into the Round of 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament, as the Knights were defeated by Southern New Hampshire in the East Region Two final on Sunday (May 12) by a score of 4-2 at the SNHU Stadium Tennis Courts.

The Penmen, who were the host and second-seed in the East Region, took the lead in doubles play after winning at Nos. 1 and 2. For Queens, Richard Sec and Kareem Rashad lost a hard-fought 6-4 decision to Miguel Marreiros and Fernando Torres at the second tandem; Cosme Jubera and Lucas Demuth, meanwhile, were done in by the Van Biezen boys---Willem and Bas---at the top match of the day by a 6-2 margin.

QC re-gained control against a team that had beaten them in the regular season thanks to the strong singles play of Mariano Biblioni and Jose Zurro at fifth- and sixth-singles respectively against the brothers Marreiros. Biblioni evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 against Miguel Marreiros while Zurro's 6-2, 6-4 win over Ricardo Marreiros put the Knights ahead by a 2-1 margin. The lead would prove to be short-lived, however, as Sec and Rashad were beaten at the second-flight and fourth-flight by the Van Biezens. This gave SNHU a 3-2 lead, needing just one point to advance to the Round of 16.

The final point would come from either the first-flight or the third. Jubera faced Tiago Fernandes in the top tandem as Demuth squared off with Emmanuel Vacalares at the third-singles match. Both players went to an opening-set tiebreak and were either in a second-set tiebreak or destined for one as the senior and freshman fought valiantly and brilliantly until the bitter end. The end, however, came at first-singles with Jubera falling to Fernandes in a 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-4) marathon that ended the match and the season for the East Coast Conference championsh.
