FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team tuned up for a Division II regional showcase with a contest on Monday (Apr. 8) at Division I Hofstra University in Hempstead. The Knights were unable to pick up the win, however, and fell to the Pride by a 4-0 score.
Queens fought valiantly at the doubles tandems but were unable to best their Hofstra counterparts despite the close contests.
Cosme Jubera and
Richard Sec dropped a tiebreak at the top spot to Shawn Jackson and Coco Haener in a 7-6 result while
Nicholas Volos and
Kareem Rashad were defeated by Marcus Smith and Jan Leithner at second-doubles in a 6-2 decision. The third-doubles match went unfinished despite
Lucas Demuth and
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade being in the throes of a tiebreak with Ryan Hardin and Giacomo Pezzoli.
Hofstra needed to win just three singles matches to claim the overall match victory, and the Pride did so with wins at No. 6, 5 and 1 to cement the win. QC's
Mariano Biblioni lost a competitive battle with Julien Wolfe at sixth-singles (6-3, 6-4) as
Jose Zurro dropped a three-setter to Pezzoli (1-6, 6-1, 0-6). Jubera and Smith went to a second-set tiebreak which Hofstra won to clinch the match, as the top flight went to the Pride by a 6-3, 7-6 margin. Sec and Rashad took a set in both of their singles matches before the match was called and Demuth was in a second-set tiebreak before the end of the competition.
Queens will look to earn the biggest non-conference victory of its spring campaign on Wednesday (Apr. 10) as the Knights head to Bronxville to face regional rival Concordia (N.Y.) at 3:30 p.m.
