Macy Kane pitched five shutout innings and
Emma Wimmer closed the door as the Queens College softball team earned a 7-0 win over NYIT on Saturday (Apr. 6) in the second game of a doubleheader in Old Westbury. The Knights had fallen to the Bears by a 4-3 score in the first game of the day, an eleven-inning marathon between the two sides.
Game One: NYIT 4, Queens (NY) 3 - Eleven Innings
The Knights fell behind in the bottom of the first inning as Brooke Scherer knocked in a run with an RBI single to put the hosts ahead by a 1-0 margin. Queens responded in the top of the fourth inning as
Maryjane D'Agostino continued a strong stretch of performances with an RBI single to left field, scoring
Noelle Bryggman. D'Agostino put the Knights out in front in the top of the sixth inning on a run-scoring base hit, but NYIT responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at two-all and send the contest to extra innings. In the eighth inning,
Danielle D'Angelo doubled home the go-ahead run but the Bears responded once again by scoring the game-tying run in the bottom of the frame. The score remained tied at 3-3 until the eleventh inning as Scherer singled to left field with Leandra Lopez scampering home from second base with the winning run thanks to an error in the outfield.
Allie Stanya went seven-and-a-third innings in the circle for the Knights with seven strikeouts, yielding three runs (two earned) on nine hits. Wimmer pitched the final three innings for Queens with the winning run being an unearned run attached to her pitching line. Bryggman went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot for Queens with D'Agostino going 2-for-4 with two RBI in the effort.
Game Two: Queens (NY) 7, NYIT 0
In the second contest, QC starter
Macy Kane took the pitcher's circle with a 3-0 lead before even throwing a pitch.
Lauren Pascual swatted a three-run home run off of Jessica Budrewicz to set the Knights off and running. Queens tacked on a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Bryggman as well as D'Angelo hitting a leadoff homer in the top of the third inning to give the Knights a 5-0 edge; the lead swelled to a six-run margin on a run-scoring double by
Gabriella Vicidomini and QC's final run came in the seventh inning on an error in the field.
Kane, meanwhile, held NYITÂ to three hits over her five innings of work with one strikeout to pick up her first win in a Knights uniform. Wimmer twirled a two-hit performance in the final two innings to keep the Bears at bay as Queens tallied nine total hits in the win. Pascual went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and Vicidomini also had a two-hit performance in the Knights' victory.
Queens will travel to Rockville Centre on Tuesday (Apr. 9) for a doubleheader against Molloy College, beginning at 3 p.m.
