SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2019) -
Jessica Hickey homered in the first game of a doubleheader as the Queens College softball team faced off with Saint Thomas Aquinas on Thursday (Apr. 11) at Spartan Field in Sparkill, N.Y. For the Knights, that would prove to be their lone spurt of offense as STAC swept the two-game set by counts of 4-1 and 8-0.
Game One: STAC 4, Queens (NY) 1
Hickey's home run came in the third inning off of STAC starter Colleen Borum, and the round-tripper cut the deficit for the Knights in half at that point. The Spartans led 2-0 after Amanda Leone's two-run shot off of QC starter
Allie Stanya in the second inning, and STAC would score two more runs in the sixth on a solo shot by Missy Sadler and a double steal.
Danielle D'Angelo had a two-hit game in the opener for Queens, while
Noelle Bryggman posted the fourth hit for the Knights in the contest. Stanya went four-and-a-third innings for QC, striking out five batters while surrendering only three hits and two runs---with both runs coming on the Leone long-ball.
Game Two: STAC 8, Queens (NY) 0 - Five Innings
The Spartans would once again take the early lead on QC in the bottom of the second inning, and it would be Leone again putting the hosts in front. This time, it was a sacrifice fly against Knights starter
Macy Kane that brought home an unearned run. STAC scored three in the third and four in the fourth with Kelcy McGeehan driving in three runs on the day. Her two-run single in the bottom of the fourth put the Spartans ahead by an 8-0 margin which would prove to be the difference and the final result. Bryggman, D'Angelo and Hickey each had a hit in the contest as did
Beth Bonin---with the team's four hits being all the offense against STAC pitcher Adrianna Dilal (five innings, seven strikeouts).
Queens will host Bridgeport on Saturday (Apr. 13) in a doubleheader in Flushing with the opening pitch set for 12 p.m. The Knights first travel to Molloy on Friday (Apr. 12) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Rockville Centre.
