Seniors Shine for Men's Tennis in 6-1 Takedown of NYIT Friday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2019) - In a battle of the top two men's tennis clubs in the East Coast Conference, the Queens College men's tennis team reigned supreme in scoring a 6-1 defeat of NYIT on Friday (Apr. 5) at the QC Tennis Center.

Queens (8-5, 3-0 ECC) now owns sole possession of first-place in the conference with match-ups still remaining against Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan next weekend.

The Knights won the doubles point in the match by sweeping the Bears (7-6, 2-1 ECC) out of all three tandems of play. Seniors Cosme Jubera and Richard Sec---part of the six seniors honored pre-match for Senior Day festivities---blazed through a 6-1 decision over Francisco Caldas and Diego Espinella at the No. 1 spot while Lucas Demuth and Hugo Evangelista won a 6-2 decision at third-doubles against Kevin Huynh and Sergio Fernandez. The second-tandem proved to be a challenge for the Knights' Kareem Rashad and Nick Volos, but QC prevailed in a 6-4 win versus Nicolas Castaldo and Yago Granda.

In singles play, Queens continued its strong form with easy wins by Rashad at second-singles (6-0, 6-2) over Castaldo and Sec at third-singles against Fernandez by a 6-3, 6-0 count. Jose Zurro clinched the match at fifth-singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Huynh as Jubera earned a straight-sets win against Caldas at the top-flight. Demuth went to three sets at the No. 4 spot before prevailing against Espinella by a score of 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3). Volos played a gritty sixth-singles match-up with Raul Guillen but dropped a 5-7, 6-7 (3-7) contest for the Bears' lone point.

Queens will make a short trip to Hempstead for a 3 p.m. match-up with Division I Hofstra University on Monday (Apr. 8).
