FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2019) - On an afternoon in which the Queens College softball team celebrated its seniors, it was a senior that crossed the plate with the winning run as the Knights earned a doubleheader split with Molloy on Thursday (Apr. 25) in Flushing. Queens lost the opening game of the doubleheader by a 4-0 score before taking a 1-0 victory in a rain-soaked finale at the QC Softball Field.
Game One: Molloy 4, Queens (NY) 0
In the blink of an eye, the opening game of the afternoon was in the top of the third inning as both starters---
Allie Stanya for Queens and Courtney Greene for Molloy---got quick innings and quicker outs to keep both offenses at bay.
Nicole Michaels recorded the first hit for Queens in the bottom of the third inning while Greene responded with a lead-off single in the fourth; Molloy would edge forward in the top of the fifth inning on a pinch-hit RBI single by Adriana Saab to center field and then break the game open with a two-run single off the bat of Amanda King. An RBI single by Greene in the top of the seventh inning brought the fourth run across for the Lions, while the Knights were stymied by Greene in the pitcher's circle as she threw a complete-game four-hitter with two strikeouts. Stanya, on the other hand, pitched five innings of four-hit ball while allowing one earned run and striking out five batters. Lauren Pasucal had two hits for Queens in the loss with Michaels and
Beth Bonin recording the other base hits.
Game Two: Queens (NY) 1, Molloy 0
As the rain started to come down to open the second game, another pitcher's duel commenced. This time,
Macy Kane and Jenna Turato would duel in a battle of freshman versus senior.
Kane went toe-to-toe with Turato for the first three innings with neither side getting offense until the bottom of the third. In that frame,
Maryjane D'Agostino drew a lead-off walk to set the table for the Knights. She stole second and then advanced to third after
Noelle Bryggman and Bonin took two-out walks to load the bases for
Sharina Nazario. The rookie infielder had a strong at-bat and took a 3-2 pitch off the plate for ball four, bringing home D'Agostino with the game's first and what proved to be only run. Meanwhile, Kane gave way to
Emma Wimmer after three scoreless innings and it was Wimmer who would pick up the win with four one-hit innings of relief and four strikeouts. The Knights mustered just two hits off of Turato, infield singles by D'Agostino and Michaels.
Queens will conclude its regular season on Sunday (Apr. 28) with a doubleheader at LIU Post in Brookville, beginning at 12 p.m.
