BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2019) - The Queens College softball team closed out its 2019 campaign with a doubleheader Sunday (Apr. 28) against LIU Post, with the Knights and Pioneers playing in Brookville one final time. Queens came up short against the Pioneers, who will enter the upcoming East Coast Conference Tournament as the top overall seed, in decisions of 3-1 and 10-1 on Sunday as the Knights wrapped up their year with an overall record of 7-30 and an ECC mark of 5-19.
Game One: LIU Post 3, Queens (NY) 1
Queens took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-out double down the left-field line by
Gabriella Vicidomini.
Jessica Hickey came around to score from second base as the Knights struck first against LIU Post starter Katie Humhej; the host Pioneers answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame against
Emma Wimmer, however. A two-out RBI single from Patricia Dun knotted the score at 1-all but that margin did not last long as Abbey Fortin launched an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the third inning to give LIU Post the lead for good. A sixth-inning run by Ashley Melendez provided the Pioneers with insurance.
Vicidomini was one of two players on the Knights with two hits, the other being rookie infielder
Sharina Nazario.
Beth Bonin,
Maryjane D'Agostino and
Danielle D'Angelo had the other hits for Queens. Wimmer went the distance for QC, surrendering three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in the loss.
Game Two: LIU Post 10, Queens (NY) 1 - Five Innings
In the second game, the Pioneers batted around in the bottom of the second inning and scored five runs with a two-run single by Julia Seader providing much of the damage. LIU Post led 7-0 after three innings before Queens put up a run in the fourth on an RBI double by
Lauren Pascual. The Pioneers then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame with Jayna Rios doubling home the final two runs to provide a mercy-rule margin as Queens could not keep the game going after the top of the fifth inning. Bonin, Nazario and Pascual had the only three hits for Queens against Hannah Olshevski.
