FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2019) - The Queens College softball team notched just two runs of offense on Tuesday (Apr. 23) as the Knights dropped a conference doubleheader to NYIT in Flushing by scores of 5-1 and 9-1.
Game One: NYIT 5, Queens (NY) 1
Queens took the lead in the opening contest in the second inning as
Jessica Hickey's RBI single scored
Danielle D'Angelo, who had doubled to open the inning. QC starter
Allie Stanya piched three-and-two-thirds no-hit innings before allowing two hits in the fourth, but the Knights held onto a 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth when Lizul Portugal knocked in the tying run with a single up the middle. The Bears broke the game open in the sixth inning as the first three batters in the frame reached against Stanya to bring up pinch hitter Carissa Della Vecchia. The lefty hitter greeted Stanya with a towering fly ball to right field that was knocked back into the field of play by the wind, resulting in a sacrifice fly that gave the visitors a 2-1 lead. Stephanie Neglia then singled to bring home another run and the Bears put up another two runs against reliever
Emma Wimmer (though the runs were charged to Stanya) as the Knights could not record any more runs to get closer in the contest.
D'Angelo had two of the Knights' five hits against Emily Koerick, who went the distance for NYIT to pick up the victory. Hickey,
Nicole Michaels and
Gabriella Vicidomini each had hits as well.Â
Game Two: NYIT 9, Queens (NY) 1 - Five Innings
NYIT jumped ahead in the top of the first inning with a three-run frame against Knights starter
Macy Kane; Mikea Lewis's sacrifice fly started the rally before Portugal cracked a two-run home run over the left field wall to give Della Vecchia a 3-0 cushion before she even threw a pitch. Queens would score a run in the bottom of the second, a run-scoring single by
Rachel Katz doing the only damage of the game against the southpaw for the Bears. NYIT would connect for six more runs in the contest against Kane and Wimmer while the Knights were stymied by Della Vecchia (eight strikeouts) in the circle.
Michaels and
Lauren Pascual had the only other hits in the proverbial nightcap for Queens.
The Knights conclude the home portion of their regular season on Thursday (Apr. 25), hosting Molloy in an ECC doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. The Knights will honor their three seniors---Michaels, Pascual and
Maryjane D'Agostino---before the contests.
