FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2019) - Through three innings of play on Tuesday (Apr. 2), the Queens College baseball team scored a run but did not obtain a hit against the pitching staff of Caldwell University. That changed in the fourth inning as the Knights broke open the doors to a three-hit and five-run inning on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Cougars at Hennekens Stadium, with the game being called in the middle of the seventh inning due to fading light in Flushing.
Queens (13-11-1) held a 1-0 lead on the visitors after scoring a run in the second inning of play. Two-out walks issued to Matt Gutleber and
Nick Font brought up
Jesse Spellman with a runner in scoring position. The rookie hit a ground ball to shortstop Luis Rullan but the throw to first base one-hopped over first baseman Jack Zosulis with Gutleber coming around to score to put the Knights ahead. Caldwell responded in the top of the third inning as Rullan led things off with a single before Anthony Parente swatted a pitch from
Dimitri Papazoglou over the left-field wall to get the Cougars in front by a 2-1 score.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gutleber rapped a 1-2 pitch to deep short with Rullan's throw unable to beat the runner as QC recorded its first hit. Font doubled on the very next pitch from reliever Michael Hess to set the Knights up with two runners in scoring position and none out. Spellman was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to load the bases for
Brian Watters, who drew a walk on a 3-2 offering to tie the score at 2-2. The at-bat by Watters was the first of four straight plate appearances by Queens that went to a full count as
Jon Strauss sent a pay-off pitch soaring to right field for a go-ahead sacrifice fly with Font scoring to put the Knights back in front for good.
Jayson Rodopoulos and
Louis Antos both drew walks on 3-2 pitches as well, with the latter being another bases-loaded walk to double QC's lead.
Joe O'Rourke then took a 2-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for a two-run single, capping the five-run inning for the Knights and giving the team a 6-2 lead. Both teams picked up an additional run in the sixth inning, with Queens getting to a 7-3 margin on an RBI double by Antos that scored Strauss.
Eloy Benson started the game for the Knights, going two innings while surrendering three hits and striking out three Cougars to begin the contest. Papazoglou pitched the next two innings and earned the win despite yielding the home run to Parente.
Adam Abreu, meanwhile, struck out five batters in his inning and two-thirds of work and
Brandon Hoskins collected four straight outs to earn the save for the Knights in the win.
Queens will open up a four-game series with Lincoln University on Friday (Apr. 5) at 3 p.m. as the Knights travel to Pennsylvania to face the newest member of the East Coast Conference for baseball.
