FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2019) - Though neither contest ended with the Queens College softball team toppling nineteenth-ranked Georgian Court on Thursday (Apr. 18), the Knights showcased impressive all-around play in falling to the Lions by scores of 2-0 and 9-5 in Flushing.
Game One: #19 Georgian Court 2, Queens (NY) 0
Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of three walks and a hit batter, the Lions were stifled at the plate as Queens starter
Emma Wimmer held the visitors hitless through the first four-and-a-third innings. The freshman hurler tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out five batters in the contest in a showcase performance in the circle. Queens, meanwhile, was limited to just five hits in the contest by Georgian Court starter Jessica O'Neil; the southpaw struck out six batters and surrendered five hits with the Knights only able to advance a runner safely to second base in the opening game.
Game Two: #19 Georgian Court 9, Queens (NY) 5
The visitors needed just one inning to put the game on ice, as seven straight batters reached base with singles in the second inning. Georgian Court scored seven runs in the frame, sending 12 batters to the plate; however, Queens refused to fold and slowly chipped away at the deficit. In the bottom of the third inning, a bases-loaded grounder hit by
Katherine Gallagher scored a run to prevent the shutout and Queens would get within a three-run deficit in the next inning after Georgian Court tacked on another run in the top of the fourth.
Jessica Hickey led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, advancing to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. A one-out double down the third-base line by
Rachel Katz scored the sophomore catcher and brought QC within an 8-2 deficit.
Nicole Michaels then reached on a fielder's choice and made it to second base on a passed ball before
Noelle Bryggman and
Beth Bonin struck for back-to-back RBI hits to chip away further at the lead. Gallagher reached on an error in the same inning to score Bryggman and Queens trailed 8-5 going into the top of the fifth. Unfortunately, the Knights were unable to keep the momentum going and eventually ran out of at-bats and time against GCU reliever and winning pitcher Bobbie Beck.
Bonin had one of her best games in a QC uniform in the proverbial nightcap, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Bryggman, Hickey, Katz and
Danielle D'Angelo had the other hits for Queens in the losing effort. While
Macy Kane started the contest and yielded all the runs in the second inning,
Allie Stanya threw six solid innings of relief with four strikeouts for the Knights.
Queens will face LIU Post in a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 20) in Brookville beginning at 12 p.m.
