Men’s Tennis Earns Crucial Regional Win Friday Versus Le Moyne, 5-2

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2019) - In a highly-intense match Friday night, the Queens College Men's Tennis team (3-3) bounced back in singles action for a 5-2 victory over the Dolphins of Le Moyne College (4-2).

The night started shaky for the Knights in doubles action as the Dolphins picked up the early lead by taking the doubles point. The first doubles duo of senior Cosme Jubera and freshman Lucas Demuth dropped their match 6-3 against Tom Jarry and Philip Blythe. The Dolphins third doubles pair of Christian Erickson and Sven Gopfrich defeated the Knights pair of senior Camilo Arias and junior Nicholas Volos 6-3 for the 1-0 lead.  The Knights second doubles duo of freshman Kareem Rashad and senior Richard Sec were victorious 6-4 against Xavier Graells and Tyler Underwood.

In singles play, the comeback started at No. 6 as Zurro wasted little time dispatching Gopfrich 6-1, 6-2 to knot the match at 1-1. The Knights took the lead for good following a win at No. 3 singles as Sec defeated Andres Hernandez 6-3, 6-2. Demuth continued the good spell with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Erickson at No. 4. Leading 3-1, the Dolphins cut the deficit down to 3-2 at No. 5 as Graells defeated Biblioni 7-6, 6-4.

With Rashad leading 5-4 in the second set after the dropping the first set 6-3, the freshman was awarded a win by default for unsportsmanlike conduct committed by Blythe at No. 2. The Knights put the finishing touches at No. 1 as Jubera bounced back to win his match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 to give Queens the victory.

The Knights will get a week off before they crossover into out-of-division play next Friday (Mar. 15) as they play host to Division III defending Skyline Conference Champions Yeshiva University. First serve is set for 12:00 PM inside the confines of the Queens College Tennis Center.
