BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Mar. 30, 2019) - The Queens College softball team exploded for ten runs in the second game of a Saturday (Mar. 30) doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport, but the Purple Knights had enough offense to win a 15-10 decision to sweep the day at Seaside Park. Bridgeport won the first game by a 7-0 score.
Game One: Bridgeport 7, Queens (NY) 0
Singles by
Noelle Bryggman for Queens and Alyssa Marmolejo for Bridgeport were the only hits each side produced through the first two-and-a-half innings as
Allie Stanya and Amanda Staheli dueled in the circle to begin the contest. UB would get to Stanya in the bottom of the third inning as the Purple Knights manufactured a run on a sacrifice fly by Kaira Ramon before Jenna DiLorenzo's two-run home run gave the hosts a 3-0 lead. RBI singles by Marmolejo and Ramon in the fourth inning put Bridgeport ahead by a 5-0 score and the two would also drive in runs in the sixth inning against
Emma Wimmer to close out UB's scoring account.Â
Queens mustered just four hits against Staheli, who tossed a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts. Bryggman led the Knights with two hits while
Sharina Nazario and
Marisa Sagona delivered hits off the bench in the losing effort.Â
Game Two: Bridgeport 15, Queens (NY) 10
Nazario got the ball rolling for the Knights in the top of the first inning of the second game, with a grand slam for her first career collegiate home run. The Knights put three runners on base without a single hit as Bryggman and
Rachel Katz drew walks book-ending Sagona being hit by a pitch. QC led 4-0 after a half-inning, but Bridgeport got a run back on a leadoff homer by Allison Luzzi against Wimmer, who started in the circle for Queens. The Knights tacked on four more runs in the top of the third inning with timely two-out hitting by Bryggman and
Nicole Michaels doing much of the damage as QC led an 8-1 margin. Bridgeport responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Luzzi led off with a double and came around to a score on a single by Marmolejo. The Purple Knights then scored 13 runs over the next three innings---four in the fourth, five in the fifth and four in the sixth---to top the Knights' efforts in the early innings. For Queens, Sagona knocked in a pair of runs with a double in the top of the sixth inning which brought QC within an 11-10 deficit until Bridgeport put the game away in the bottom-half of the inning.
