FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team has found its rhythm with the Knights picking up their sixth straight victory on Wednesday (Mar. 27) in a 6-1 defeat of Saint Thomas Aquinas at the QC Tennis Center. The win pushes Queens to a 6-3 overall record and a 2-0 mark in East Coast Conference play.
STAC (6-3, 1-1 ECC) made the Knights work for the win by throwing a scare into the doubles play. The Spartans' Marcel Volz and Mitchell Harrison earned a 6-2 win against Stan Bedrune and
Camilo Arias at the third-tandem; however,
Cosme Jubera and
Lucas Demuth triumphed via a 6-1 score against top-team Tim Fleerkamp and Luke Taplin to force a winner-take-all second-match. The battle between the two sides went to a tiebreak before
Richard Sec and
Kareem Rashad pulled out a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Paul Voigt and Enij Hasicevic to put Queens ahead by a 1-0 margin.
The Knights then rolled through singles play, with Rashad dispatching of Fleerkamp in the second flight by counts of 6-3 and 6-1.
Jose Zurro's 6-2, 6-3 win against Taplin in fifth-singles put Queens on the brink of a victory which was achieved when Demuth sent Gijs Anton Offringa packing by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
Mariano Biblioni came back from a set down at sixth-singles to knock off Harrison (2-6, 7-5, 6-3) while Sec needed nearly two tiebreaks to take down Voigt at the third-flight by a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 score. Jubera, on the other hand, went to tiebreaks with Volz at the top pairing and STAC recorded the 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) win to salvage the point.
Queens will now swing up to New England for a three-day, three-match circuit against teams in the Northeast-10 Conference beginning with a 3 p.m. match-up on Friday (Mar. 29) against Southern New Hampshire University.
