FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2019) – The Queens College softball team was unable to salvage a split with Saint Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday (Mar. 26) in an ECC doubleheader with the Spartans in Flushing. STAC claimed a 12-2 win in the opening contest before pulling away with a 6-1 win in the proverbial nightcap.
Game One: STAC 12, Queens (NY) 2
Both the Spartans and the Knights scored a pair of runs in the opening inning against starters
Allie Stanya and Colleen Borum. STAC took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Ashley Landolina while Queens came back with an RBI single from
Rachel Katz and a run-scoring groundout by
Katherine Gallagher. Both starters held serve for the next two innings until St. Thomas Aquinas scored two runs in the fourth on a two-RBI double by Taylor Sullivan. That opened the floodgates for the visitors as STAC would score eight more runs over the final three innings while QC was limited to just one hit over the remainder of the contest.
Katz was one of four Knights with hits on the game, a list that also included
Danielle D'Angelo,
Jessica Hickey and
Gabriella Vicidomini. Stanya struck out three batters in her four innings of work while
Macy Kane collected two strikeouts in relief. Borum went the distance for STAC with one strikeout while Melissa Sadler had a three-hit game. Landolina and Sullivan both drove in three runs for the Spartans.
Game Two: STAC 6, Queens (NY) 1
In the second contest,
Emma Wimmer and Adrianna Dilal were locked in a pitcher's duel in the circle for much of the contest. Neither pitcher yielded a hit until the third inning, when Dilal took a 1-2 offering deep over the left-center field wall to put the visitors ahead. Queens, meanwhile, was unable to get a ball in play through the first seven at-bats as Dilal sent down seven straight batters via strikeout. Dilal was perfect through three innings but Vicidomini clocked an 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence in the fourth to take away the no-hitter, perfect game and shutout. Katz singled through the right side of the infield but the Knights could not get her across the plate.
The game remained a 1-1 tie into the sixth inning when STAC reclaimed the lead. A one-out double to left-center by Briana Keaveney set the table for Caitlyn Francoeur to swat an 0-1 pitch from Wimmer into virtually the exact same spot on the field to score the go-ahead run and put the Spartans ahead by a 2-1 line. The Spartans would score four more runs in the frame to further their lead to an insurmountable margin.
The Queens College softball team will next be in action on Saturday (Mar. 30) as the Knights head to Bridgeport to take on the Purple Knights of UB in an ECC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
