FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2019) - For the first time in program history, the Queens College women's tennis team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University as the Division II Knights topped the Division I Knights by a 5-2 score on Saturday evening (Mar. 23) in Flushing.
Queens (12-3) swept the doubles play, winning in all three tandems against Fairleigh Dickinson (5-5) on the night.
Reehan Rashad and
Luisa Auffarth scored a 6-3 win at the first tandem while
Marisa Ostoja and
Laura Ortega Jover also won a 6-3 match at third-doubles.
Louisa Brunetti and
Anica Knezevic needed a tie-break to claim their match at second doubles, winning a 7-6 (8-6) decision.
QC continued its momentum in singles play, winning four of the six requisite matches to earn the overall match victory. Brunetti clinched the overall win at fourth-singles with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph versus Liza Rachenko while Auffarth bulldozed Patricia Eftenoiu in a 6-0, 6-3 win at second-singles. Ortega Jover outlasted Anamaria Vladescu at the fifth-flight (4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 10-8 and
Ruth Artaza Martin notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory at sixth-singles over Carolin Menzen as well.
The Knights return to action on Apr. 5 as the team faces regional foe Goldey-Beacom in Wilmington, Del. at 1 p.m.
